Altona Refinery reaches operational milestone

ENERGY and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor has welcomed the 60th anniversary of the Altona Refinery.

Batchelor says the mineral processing facility has provided employment for generations of workers and fuel to power Victoria’s industry and vehicles.

Production at the refinery began in July 1949, with a capacity of just 2200 barrels of crude oil a day, about 3% of current production capacity. Now, each day the refinery produces up to 13 million litres of refined petroleum products — enough to fill more than 300,000 cars.

Batchelor says the Victorian Government is providing strong leadership by supporting industry so that Victorians can continue to have a continued supply of affordable energy and a strong employment sector.

The Minister says the refinery has also made significant investments to reduce the plant’s impact on the environment and local community during the past decade.

Since 2001, greenhouse gas emissions from the refinery have been cut by over 40%.

  • If it currently produces up to 13 million litres of refined petroleum products everyday, how many tonnes of pollution does it pump into the Altona area's air each day/night? That number is of much bigger concern to the locals.
