Project Iron Boomerang feasibility study begins

A STUDY into the feasibility of Project Iron Boomerang is currently underway.

The project would establish first stage iron and steel smelting parks near Newman Fortescue River Valley in Western Australia (WA) and at Abbot Point Precinct in Queensland (QLD) (near Bowen, N-Qld) linked by a new heavy gauge railway line.

East West Line Parks would build, own and operate the rail link and the smelter park precincts and provide logistics and other services to the smelters.

The development would slash the cost of delivering slab steel exports to Australia's major trading partners.

Reportedly, twenty of the world's biggest steel companies and forty-eight other financial backers have signed confidential undertakings to put up the money.

The steelmakers would build new blast furnaces in the smelter parks as well as bbuild, own and independently control and operate the blast furnaces.

The project is predicted to create 35,000 jobs.

  • What a fantastic idea, this country can be much more than a quarry, it is a good example of vertical integration, a way to create a lot of permanent jobs. Much of the equipment can be made here, eg. rail, wagons and steel for the mills at both ends. All I can see is nothing but positives for the nation. Even if the Government had to borrow the money to finance it they would soon get it back once the project became operational. All we need now is poliiticians with vision.
