ABB to install substation for RIO iron ore

ABB HAS landed a $48m deal with Rio Tinto for power projects to increase capacity at its iron ore mines in the Pilbara.

ABB will supply turnkey, high-voltage substations to enable Rio increase its production from 163Mt to 220Mt each year to meet increased world demand.

The projects are the first of eight to be awarded by Rio in connection with its power systems upgrade in the Western Australian region.

Rio has committed nearly $7bn to upgrades on port, rail, power and mine assets in the Pilbara since 2009 to increase capacity.

The current order with ABB includes all design, equipment, civil and electrical works and project management. Work is expected to be operational by the end of 2009.
