Amateur prospectors strike gold

TWO amateur gold prospectors have struck gold with a hand-held metal detector near Ballarat in western Victoria.

Steve Glasson and Russell Sanderson say they owe their discovery to a $6000 gold detector and a “rich vein of luck”.

The recreational prospectors discovered several hundred ounces of gold covering 15 square metres in an undisclosed Ballarat location.

Sanderson says he searched the same area several years ago, but only discovered several nuggets just below the surface.

He attributes the find to “up-to-date prospecting technology”, and says he would not have made the discovery without the detector.

The gold reef has been sold to a private buyer for an undisclosed amount.
