THE QUEENSLAND Government has criticised Premier Anna Bligh over her refusal to allow uranium mining in the state.
Many among the government believe the block of yellowcake mining is an outdated policy and fear it will damage Bligh’s election chances.
Bligh claims that despite the recent significant job losses, she remains unconvinced about lifting the ban. She says the change is likely to create only 150 jobs, and would require significant start-up costs.
Sceptics suggest the creation of 150 jobs from uranium mining during such uncertain times will provide food on the tables of 150 more households.
The Western Australian Government recently came under attack from the Greens who accused the authority of risking lives through the transport of yellowcake across the state. The group claimed although the numbers of train and truck accident has been reduced there is still a huge rick of the radioactive yellowcake powder escaping during a crash and being ingested by people.
LNP leader Lawrence Springborg says the Opposition does not object in principle to uranium mining and applications should be assessed on their merits. He says mining of uranium in the state should be no different to Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, with any application required to meet the same stringent requirements as other mining projects.
