A RISE in copper theft incidents has sparked a national campaign, according to the QLD Mines and Energy Minister.
Ergon Energy has joined with Crime Stoppers [www.crimestoppers.com.au] to combat the thefts, which are believed to be on the rise with increased copper prices.
Mines and Energy (DME) Minister, Geoff Wilson, says the theft is dangerous for thieves and can be disruptive to the community.
Thieves are at risk of electric shock and electrocution when stealing copper, and do not need to come into direct contact with equipment to be harmed.
Ergon is working with police and other utilities to target the thieves. Strategies will include improved security and surveillance measures, as well as an awareness campaign.
