Investigation into Boyne smelter blaze

THE QUEENSLAND Environment Department is investigating a fire that occurred at the Boyne smelter on 1 May 2009.

The authority says that this is the second fire at aluminium smelter in less than two years.

Rio Tinto Alcan says the fire started during a planned shutdown at the site and there were no injuries.

The Department says that the blaze started in the smelter’s carbon bake furnace.
