THE MINERALS Down Under Flagship is inviting applications for PhD scholarships commencing in early 2010.
The A$114 million Flagship Collaboration Fund was established to facilitate the involvement of the broader Australian research community in addressing the ambitious goals of the National Research Flagships.
The CSIRO says the main selection criteria for scholarships will be the relevance of the proposed work to the needs of a Flagship and the quality of the student.
When applying for a scholarship, students should indicate which of the research areas their proposed research is relevant to. If a student’s research is not directly relevant to any of these areas, their application must clearly state how it is aligned with the work of the Flagship.
The Flagship Collaboration Fund offers top-up and full scholarships, students should clearly indicate which they are applying for. International students may apply but must be able to show evidence of enrolment in an Australian university.
The Minerals Down Under Flagship has nominated molecular dynamic simulation of metal speciation in ore fluids as a priority research area for postgraduate scholarships commencing in early 2010. As well as, data storage and analysis of diverse 4D geoscience data sets across the minerals industry and computation and technology developments in cutting and drilling tools for mining and excavation engineering.
Also, the group has resolved to research the fundamental chemical mechanisms of CSIRO’s proprietary process for removing phosphorus impurity from Australian iron ores and fundamental studies on break-up of a high velocity stream of liquid, focusing on formation of droplets by a spinning disc as in the dry slag granulation process.
