Norway pulls out of Rio gold and copper investments

THE Norwegian government has abandoned a $1bn investment in Rio’s gold and copper operations, amid claims the company is involved in unethical conduct in Indonesia’s Papua province.

The Grasberg site in West Papua is home to the world’s largest gold mine and third biggest copper mine.

Norway’s finance minister says Rio’s Indonesian operations are causing severe environmental damage, including the destruction of rainforests and marine life.

Rio disputes the findings, and says it is both surprised and disappointed about the withdrawal.
