Plans to amp up uranium mining spark speculation that the NPT policy will be modified

THE FEDERAL Government is reportedly planning to quadruple the mining of uranium which is arousing speculation that Australia may modify its policy of not selling the yellowcake to non-signatories of Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), like India.

The reports have been sparked by the South Australian Premier Mike Rann’s claims that an increase in mining of uranium, which was hitherto confined to only three mines, would enable Australia to overtake Canada as the world's leading supplier of uranium.

Ran claims Australia’s rich mineral resources should be fully utilised to beat global recession.

The Premier has reportedly told Indian journalists that the policy would be discussed by Rudd during his visit to New Delhi.

Rann referred to Australia’s marked change in its policy on uranium mining, emphasising that nuclear policy in the country is not static.
