PNG refuses licence near Kokoda Track

AN AUSTRALIAN mining company has been forced to cancel plans for a copper mine after the Papua New Guinean government refused to renew the company’s exploration licence near the Kokoda Track.

Frontier Resources says it has received conflicting reasons as to why the licence was not renewed, and is moving to overturn the government’s decision.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the company are now seeking leave for a judicial review at a hearing in the national court.

Copper ore is extracted from chalcopyrite using heap leach or dump leaching processes to produce copper, which is used in a variety of electrical applications.
