Record gold prices prompt SA mine expansion

DOMINION Gold (DML) has announced its Challenger mine in South Australia will undergo expansions if the gold price remains strong.

The price of gold has topped $1,500 in Australian dollar terms in recent weeks, marking the highest prices ever recorded.

DML operations manager, Peter Bamford, says the situation has changed in a “very, very short time” for miners of the precious metal.

If expansion plans go ahead, the project is expected to provide up to 50 jobs for displaced workers.

The Challenger mine is an underground operation located 750km north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is one of the most remote mines in Australia and has a reserve of 512,000oz of gold from a resource of one million ounces.
