RIO TINTO’S iron ore train drivers will take further strike action by walking off the job for the second time in one week on 17 October 2008.
Workers will take part in a four-hour work strike from 10am (WST) on Friday 17 October.
The employees are seeking a pay rise of 4.75% each year, as well as a $20,000 salary allowance to compensate for lost income from automated trains.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) says 90% of Rio’s main train drivers did not show up to their shifts when the workers took part in the first industrial strike in 16 years on 12 October 2008.
The CFMEU says the action was the beginning of a campaign to get Rio to “come to the table”. The Union says if the company continues not to address the issues, it will be forced to “ramp-up industrial action”.
Rio claims the strike action has not impacted output at its Pilbara operations.
