Rio Tinto is considering almost tripling bauxite production from its Cape York mines to accommodate long-term growth in aluminum demand.
The mining giant is studying options to boost production at its Weipa operations from 18Mt to 35Mt a year from 2013.
Going one step further, the company is also seeking government approval to increase production as high as 50Mt in the future.
Rio says the move follows increased demand, prompted by the industrialization in China and India.
