Woodside’s proposed LNG plant could be left behind

WOODSIDE plans to build a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant on the 3500ha site at James Price Point on the Dampier Peninsula, 60km north of Broome.

The company says it wants to create a processing hub where future resource developments could be concentrated.

The federal and WA governments support the development on the site which has been on Aboriginal sacred land for thousands of years.

The Kimberley Land Council is meeting with traditional owners in Broome on 15 April 2009 to discuss the Woodside proposal.

The 30-year contract would include provisions for land-swaps, education, housing, employment and health.

However, Kimberley Land Council Chief Executive says the Indigenous people don't want to be rushed to make a decision.

Rob Hirst has publically pressured ex-bandmate federal environment minister Peter Garrett to exert his influence to stop the development of the proposed West Australian gas plant.
